Mine was the same, has it got very fine worn looking plastic dust on the inside groove(hard to describe).
I cleaned mine with soap and water and a scrub from an old tooth brush.Works...

select Custom Menu. SelectAF/AE Lock/ Fn 1. change to FN 1. Now you can assign a fn to Fn 1. Select Fn Button Set, select F1 , select Metering mode.

If it is sharp for a 6x4 print and not for a A4 print then this would suggest that your output sharpening is not enough for that size.

One size sharpening does not fit all as far as inkjet...

Tim here is a quick example of the radial filter I find useful.

From start to finish less than a minute in LR5, highlight slider adjusted then just a quick dab on the sparrow with the adjustment...

Presuming you want TTL / Auto etc, the Metz certainly would work very well. I have never used Promasters. The Metz 44 and 58 are both widely used, and I have no doubt the new 52 will be very good...
